Named after King George II’s favorite beverage, Port, the Port Wine Guest House, known locally as Pota Uaine Fale, resides just a block away from the former residence of the King himself, situated on his land called Veitatalo, now maintained by the government.
Luisa and Pota Tuiniua embarked on welcoming tourists to their home in the late 1970s, including Japanese engineers and builders engaged in various projects in Vava’u, such as constructing the Vava’u high school and establishing roads.
Upon their children’s departure for high school, Pota initiated the transformation of their family abode into a guest house. Juggling roles as a town officer and fisherman, Pota, along with Luisa, who worked full-time as a midwife, officially registered their business in 1983.
As pioneers in Vava’u’s accommodation scene, the Port Wine Guest House significantly contributed to the development of whale watching in the area. Pota played a crucial role in establishing guidelines for whale protection and collaborated with marine biologists from New Zealand and Australia to introduce educational programs on sustainable whale watching to the local community.
Pota’s warmth and hospitality endeared him to guests until his passing in 1998, leaving Luisa to manage the business. Their eldest son, Tai, inherited the land, adhering to Tongan cultural tradition. Despite living in Melbourne, Australia for over two decades, Tai regularly returned to assist Luisa and enhance the guesthouse. In 2008, he permanently relocated to Tonga to revamp the existing guesthouse, construct a new one, and offer guests additional activities like kayaking, day trips, and lighting courses.
